AIB International's Consolidated Standards for Inspection: Exploring Impact Through Real-World Success Stories

In an industry full of food safety schemes, regulatory bodies, and best practices, AIB International's Consolidated Standards provide manufacturers with a comprehensive, user-friendly, and actionable baseline for what's right and what's wrong in food safety operations.

Using these Standards (and some expert help), your team can adapt how they think about food safety and make the proactive changes necessary to avoid consequences like public health risks, recalls, and failed inspections.

See for yourself how the Consolidated Standards framework has helped shape the way businesses approach food safety and made a real difference in the food manufacturing industry.

What are AIB International's Consolidated Standards for Inspection?

AIB International's Consolidated Standards for Inspection were originally established in 1956 and evolved into a globally recognized framework for food, beverage, grain-handling, packaging, and non-food-contact packaging facilities, as well as distribution centers, looking to improve their food safety measures. These Standards are based on Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) — working as a roadmap that helps businesses strengthen operations and support regulatory readiness.

The Standards are updated regularly to reflect the latest food safety regulations, best practices, and emerging technologies. Grounded in real food safety laws and industry expectations, these Standards provide insights for five key facility areas:

  1. Operational Methods and Personnel Practices

  2. Maintenance for Food Safety

  3. Cleaning Practices

  4. Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

  5. Adequacy of Prerequisite and Food Safety Programs

This last category largely involves evaluating documentation against on-the-floor observations to ensure your team is set up for success and consistency through effective food safety program development.

The Consolidated Standards document is free for anyone to download, but accessing and familiarizing yourself with these Standards is only the first step. Then, it's time to see how your real-world operations stack up.

AIB International Food Safety Professionals (FSPs) are available to provide one of three core inspection services:

  • GMP training inspection: Combines facility inspections with hands-on, real-world guidance on Consolidated Standards for your team.

  • Facilities inspection only: An unscored inspection that identifies visible GMP risks on the floor.

  • Broad GMP inspection: Analyzes both facility and program effectiveness to provide benchmark scores using Consolidated Standards and identify opportunities for improvement.

During a scored inspection, an FSP will assign a risk level and score to each of the five key areas mentioned above, based on the most significant issue they identify in that area. Each category can receive a maximum score of 200 when no issues or identified risks are observed, for a total possible facility score of 1,000. Scores of 135 or below within a category are considered “Unsatisfactory.”

Using these expert insights, your facility can make the necessary changes to minimize risks and navigate your next regulatory audit or inspection with confidence.

The Role and Impact of Consolidated Standards in Real-World Manufacturing

At AIB International, we’ve seen firsthand how these Standards can change food safety for the better.

In 2013, AIB International began working with a food safety client in India, evaluating the operation using Consolidated Standards. During the client’s first inspection, the facility accumulated enough serious findings and observations to receive a negative total score on the Consolidated Standards scorecard.

Rather than treating this score as a failure, the client used these findings as a roadmap to make the necessary adjustments for gradual improvement, building a stronger food safety culture with the Standards as a guide.

Over more than a decade, this facility has steadily improved its food safety measures, now scoring between 920 and 950 on the Standards’ 1,000-point scale. Brajraj Singh Chauhan, APAC Regional Manager at AIB International, shared that this change wasn’t brought about by simply “spending money and improving things."

Instead, this facility’s long-term success came from "slowly, slowly absorbing the requirements,” changing their understanding of what they needed to do over time rather than making sweeping changes overnight.

Today, Chauhan jokes that workers in this facility seem more capable at following and understanding the Standards than he does, happily observing that, these days, the AIB International team is hard-pressed to find issues during inspections. “It’s so nice to see the facilities which were struggling to maintain basic fundamental food safety requirements setting the benchmarks nowadays in the market."

These long-term accomplishments are not an isolated case. These Standards and the partnership of AIB International experts provide clarity, guidance, real-world insights, and awareness that can build the foundation of a truly preventive, inspection-ready food safety strategy.

Simplifies complex food safety regulatory goals into actionable, easy-to-understand language

You shouldn't have to be a food safety attorney to understand the regulatory language around GMPs. That's why our Standards break down complex requirements into clear, actionable steps that your team can follow to align with expectations.

This doesn't just mean making regulations easier for managers to understand. Jesse Leal, inspector and food safety professional for AIB International, says, "We've broken [regulatory guidelines] down for a sanitarian, someone working the weekends, a janitor to understand."

With access to this clear language, every team member is better equipped to apply these Standards in real facility conditions in their everyday work. What’s more, FSPs can help your team move beyond literal interpretations of food safety requirements, instead helping them focus on how to execute them in their day-to-day responsibilities to achieve the intended goal: protecting consumers from harm.

Creates a proactive partnership between FSPs and facilities

Combining Standards documentation with expert guidance can help your team to get the most out of this framework. FSPs offer their help not as judge, jury, and executioner — but as partners who are on your side in your efforts to improve food safety before a regulatory inspection.

FSPs work with facilities to identify issues before regulators have the chance to find them and levy consequences. These experts work alongside your team to improve your GMP performance by providing real-world observations, actionable recommendations, and education on what following these Standards means for day-to-day operations.

Our FSPs also understand that food safety starts from the top; they work alongside facility leadership to emphasize their role and responsibility in maintaining food safety as well.

Offers a comprehensive review of operations

Consolidated Standards experts work to provide what client solutions and training specialist Marcelo Lilla describes as "a picture of the moment." He says that, while clients may not always receive the result they expect, inspection findings remain "a valuable result which reflects the reality for the facility."

To secure an accurate snapshot of your operations, FSPs work with cross-departmental teams and spend a majority of their time (around 80%, according to Chauhan) on the shop floor during inspections. This lets FSPs work hands-on to provide real-time insights into where GMP risks may be hiding in your facilities, while empowering every team member to take ownership over their role in food safety.

Chauhan highlights an example of another client who embraced the value (and sometimes uncomfortable truth) of a scored inspection under Consolidated Standards, telling his team, "Even if I get 20 unsatisfactory [issues], if those are eye-openers… I would be happy, because that is why we are calling [AIB International]: to help us out."

Explains the "why" behind food safety policies

Gaps between your employees' understanding of the "how" and "why" of food safety requirements may be the difference between passing and failing your next inspection. Not only do Consolidated Standards use clear, action-based language to better translate these concepts for your team, but FSPs can also work alongside your team to break down the thinking behind these policies and drive worker adoption.

Through rationale-based training, your employees can keep the reasoning behind your food safety policies in mind as they perform their day-to-day tasks. Your team may know, for instance, that they should wash their hands regularly as a preventive measure — but do they understand why?

FSPs can explain the logic behind microbial contamination and how handwashing reduces this risk. This understanding reinforces the importance of seemingly low-risk food safety measures and builds an awareness among your employees that will encourage them to complete these essential tasks to the best of their ability every time.
